As I compose, my intention is to create pieces of music which I feel make a meaningful impact on the performer as well as the listener. In so doing, my challenge has been to develop a style which is at once assessable to the average concert goer while at the same time uniquely satisfying for the musician to perform and for myself to compose.

Stylistically, I would describe my music as being post-modern in nature.  By that I mean it has been influenced by both the Minimalist and Neo-Romantic trends of the past twenty years. Each of the above trends have been tempered to conform to my own personal preferences.

My recent works make use of repeated materials that are subtly modified and often presented in overlapping layers.  At the same time , my music has not abandoned certain features of traditional concert music such as lyrical melodies and clearly delineated formal structures.

Much of my music is inspired by extra musical sources such as the visual arts, dance  and the natural world. A series of my works was inspired by the Sonoran Desert region of Arizona and Mexico. Some of my recent pieces were influenced by the works of tile artist Melody Peters. In particular, her sense of pattern, line and form have had an impact on some of my musical conceptions.

A very important goal of mine is to write at least one opera in my lifetime. In my view, opera is the ultimate collaborative artistic statement because the composer interacts with both the visual, and literary artist. Another appealing aspect of opera is that it affords the composer a chance to treat the orchestra as well as the voice in a dramatic fashion.
